(PS117) Campden Tablets are most commonly used in winemaking, however Campden tablets also serve a very big roll in the process of making beer.
Tap water contains either chlorine or chloramines to deliver safe water to your home. These chemicals should be removed or you could end up with noticeable off-flavors in your beer. Letting the water stand overnight, or boiling the water will remove chlorine, but treatment with Campden tablets will fully eliminate both chemicals.
Using Campden Tablets: For brewing, use ¼ tablet per 5 gallons of Water. Crush the tablet and stir it into the bucket of water, or you can drop directly into your mash tun, or boil kettle. The reaction is fairly immediate, and you may briefly smell a bit of sulfur.
